Because of this community’s generosity — through last year’s Day of Golf, the World’s Longest Hockey Game, and Toast of the Town — we raised $2.5 million to bring seven specialized machines to Edmonton, making it the only lab in Canada (and one of just four in North America) able to manufacture and deliver CAR T-cell therapy under one roof.

Those machines have arrived. Now, the 2026 Day of Golf funds the next step: putting them to work through a groundbreaking clinical trial led by Dr. Chu and Dr. Sandu.

The trial targets multiple myeloma — a rare, incurable blood cancer that affects 300 Albertans a year and rarely attracts major research funding. For patients who’ve exhausted every other treatment, this trial offers something they haven’t had in a long time: a fighting chance, and the ability to access it right here at home rather than waiting behind patients elsewhere. It also proves what Alberta’s new cell therapy platform can do — a foundation that could one day extend to other blood cancers, solid tumours, and beyond.
